Securing Customer Personal Data for Small to Medium Businesses

As data breaches increasingly impact Australian businesses and their customers, it is crucial businesses improve their cyber security posture and practices to ensure their customers’ personal data is secure.

In this new publication by ASD ACSC, Securing Customer Data for Small to Medium Businesses, business owners can access principle-based guidance to ensure their data security, collection and usage practices are appropriate.

Data breaches against Australian businesses and their customers are increasing in complexity, scale and impact.  In a country that is increasingly conducting business online, businesses have a responsibility to keep the personal data they collect from customers secure from unauthorised access, unauthorised disclosure, corruption and loss.

City Rural Insurance brokers are providing you with access to a variety of basic tools and tips to safeguard your business today.

Key Data Security Practises

For businesses to be confident they are employing appropriate data security practices, ASD’S ACSC has outlined a number of key recommendations that businesses should consider implementing. These key recommendations are:

  • Create a register of personal data
  • Limit personal data collected
  • Delete unused personal data
  • Consolidate personal data repositories
  • Control access to personal data
  • Encrypt personal data
  • Backup personal data
  • Log and monitor access to personal data
  • Implement secure Bring Your Own Device practices
  • Report a data breach involving personal data

Businesses cannot afford to forgo investing in their security, and risk compromising the security of their customers’ personal data.

The prevalence of data breaches and ransomware attacks underscores the importance of sound security practices. Businesses cannot afford to assume that they will not be targeted. Investing in security proactively can be far more cost effective than having to manage the repercussions and costs of a major data breach.

So, What can you do?

Firstly, implement strategies into your business that can safeguard private and classified information from cybercriminals. Do not hesitate to contact any of City Rural’s trusted insurance brokers to help you in this process to protect against the uncertainty and danger of cyber attacks.

City Rural Insurance Brokers then encourage you to get involved and support Australian businesses, by sharing the Securing Customer Data for Small to Medium Business publication with your networks.

Let’s work together to help make Australia and Australian businesses more cyber secure.
